Ventriloquist and Dummy (1971)
I made several performances with Graham Challifour and Rod Melvin. An interest in magical ritual and the Research into Lost Knowledge organisation (RILKO), as well as the Theatre of the Absurd inspired several performances. During that period, I had produced a performance of Tristan Tzara’s Gas heart at the gasworks in Reading and several works as Mere Ubu with Alastair Brotchie.
In one performance, Ventriloquist and Dummy 1972, we played with notions of free-will; who manipulated whom and what manipulated what. I exploited this idea by making myself into a dummy where my mouth was moved for me and my shoes were tied to my feet in a conflict of what led what. In another performance in the Great Hall, Reading 1971, we explored the notion of the Consummation, Crucifixion and Resurrection as perceived by the Virgin Mary.
