A Dark Lantern and Burning Match East End derelict house, London Paul Burwell and I explored many annual ceremonies including Burns Night, Succot, All Souls Day and Guy Fawkes Night, recreating various versions of them over the years. Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent To blow up the King and Parli'ment. Three-score barrels of powder below To prove old England's overthrow; By God's providence he was catch'd With a dark lantern and burning match Guy Fawkes inspired many experiments including drawings on heat responsive paper made by twisting a burning sparkler to make a spiral. I also utilized the sparks from whirling wire wool to leave a wild trace of their journey. Most recently I used this technique in Reap for a piece called Visitations in which people burnt incense on a sheet of paper each month thus recording their presence in the space and the varying attendance at the exhibition over the course of the year. |
