Artifact Gallery, Tel Aviv I have often used various physical devices to transform my voice. Words have a real material presence giving a sensation of trying to taste them or feel one’s way around them, like little sculptures in the mouth. Here in Israel for the first time, strong memories arose of Jewish rituals from my childhood and I observed how words are originally ‘placed’ in the mouth. I was very aware of the huge dichotomy between the attraction of ancient sacrament, in the sense of millions of tongues for thousands of years having formed around the words, and, on the other hand, the enormous indoctrination involved in those words. |
