Staglinec, Croatia August 2008 I hung up second hand flowery dresses from Croatia alongside pairs of scissors on several trees in the grounds of an old farmhouse, the ancestral home of artist Vlasta Delimar, and invited the audience to cut out the flowers. During the process I asked them about their own experiences and thoughts during the recent war. "Whilst touching on the trauma of the collapse of Yugoslavia, the ecstacy of unrequited romantic love, the loneliness of old age, the sheer sense of anarchic creativity of all these performances and installations have made the lonely fruit tress which surround the little house in the fields bloom once again, not only with a myriad of flower dresses but also with the fruits of generosity. In an era where artists are frequently reduced to either talking only to themselves or to busily performing to the rich and influential of the art world, this is a very precious commodity indeed." from Ode to Women of Staglinec, catalogue essay for Staglinec Festival 08 by Peter Fink. |
