Black Mass (2007)
Gunpowder Park
London, June 2007

Following on from their massive sky drawing created for Artists Airshow 1, Anne Bean, Mark Anderson and Nick Sales were commissioned to make a large-scale pyrotechnic work which reflected the history of munitions manufacture at Gunpowder Park and launched a sky-borne sculptural mass of dense black smoke which aimed to block out the sun.

Onwards and upwards then to a lovely, unusual demonstration that proved that pyrotechnics can be as much about smoke as they are about fire. Anne Bean created a small black cloud - she gave it a name - 'Black Mass' - then let it drift off to join its natural brothers and sisters in the sky - of which there were many.
This was the attempt to eclipse the sunset. There was no sun so there was no sunset and no eclipse, but it seemed suitably miraculous anyway
